New Kitchens On The Block: A First Taste of What We’re Building
A few weeks ago, we got to do one of those things that’s equal parts exhilarating and mildly terrifying in the best way: we participated in New Kitchens On The Block at Mess Hall in Brookland.
If you’re not familiar, the whole point of the event is simple (and honestly, brilliant): give DC diners a chance to taste what’s coming next—before the doors officially open. It’s a room full of people who genuinely care about food, hospitality, and craft… and a lineup of soon-to-open concepts putting their work on a plate and letting the city respond in real time.
What It Meant For Us at DLC
For us at District Larder Co., it was more than “come try a bite.” It was a chance to introduce the why behind what we’re doing.
We’re building District Larder to be the kind of place where the details matter—where you can taste the difference, ask questions, learn something, and walk out with ingredients you’re genuinely excited to use. New Kitchens gave us a room full of curious, hungry, smart people to share that with, face-to-face.
And I’ll say this: DC showed up.
The Best Part: The Conversations
Events like this are loud, fast, and constant—there’s always someone moving, tasting, asking, comparing notes. But the moments I keep thinking about are the quick conversations at the table:
- “Where is this from?”
- “How do you use it?”
- “When are you opening?”
- “Okay, I need this in my kitchen immediately.”
That’s the energy we’re chasing—because District Larder isn’t just about selling products. It’s about building trust. Helping people cook better, host better, stock their pantry with intention, and feel connected to what they’re eating.
A Huge Thanks
Big thanks to the New Kitchens team for creating a platform that actually supports new concepts (and lets people discover them early), and to Mess Hall for hosting.
And to everyone who came through, tasted, asked questions, and offered encouragement: I appreciate you more than you know. You’re part of the reason we’re doing this.
We’re close. And if New Kitchens was any indication, we’re building something DC is ready for.
See you soon.

Got the meatball sub and the mortadella & capicola sandwich. Both were amazing! My husband often doesn’t like capicola as it can be stringy, but theirs was perfect and the sauce for the meatball sub was so flavorful! Especially impressive for their first day open.
